There’s a gem of a neighborhood bordering downtown Nashville. History and urban life collide in the neighborhood of Germantown. Located a couple of miles from downtown, Germantown has a rich history. The area was established in the 1850s by German immigrants and is considered Nashville’s first suburb. The homes are a mix of old, restored Victorians, newer townhomes and low-rise apartments.
So what does Germantown have to offer a homeowner?
Walkability and green space
Walkability in this neighborhood is off the charts. You’ll be within easy walking distance to amazing restaurants, the Nashville Farmers Market, and Bicentennial Mall Park. This large green space is an oasis filled with tons of activity and people of all ages. It’s not often that you can be surrounded by such fantastic green spaces so close to a downtown urban area. In fact, the neighborhood has been designated as a city Arboretum by the Nashville Tree Foundation because there are more than 100 species of trees in the area.
Great local businesses
Germantown boasts great local restaurants and shops as well, such as the home cooking Monell’s and the award-winning Rolf and Daughters. The Nashville Farmer’s Market is also nearby, which is open year round and filled to the brim with fresh produce and great food from the local businesses. Many people also flock to Peter Nappi’s luxury leather goods store in an old meatpacking plant in Germantown for high-quality goods and gifts.
Of course, the close proximity to downtown allows for easy access to all the great music venues and bars. First Tennessee Park, where the Nashville Sounds baseball team plays, is also located in Germantown. But the biggest event in the neighborhood hands down is the Nashville Oktoberfest. Nashvillians and tourists alike take to the streets to celebrate the rich German history through food, drinks, and entertainment.
Germantown is a fantastic place to put down roots in a homey, historic neighborhood that’s in close proximity to all the great assets Nashville has to offer.
